St Leonard’s Postgraduate College launched the ‘Introduction to Statistics’, a free course for research degree students and staff:

This course, delivered by academic colleagues from the Centre for Research into Ecological and Environmental Modelling (CREEM), introduces basic statistical concepts and analysis methods commonly used in research. Taught over three months, the course material is divided into four parts: All About Data; Probability and Statistical Distributions; Hypothesis Tests; and Regression and Linear Models. The methods covered are applied using the statistical programming environment R and RStudio and the course includes a substantial practical component.

Course materials – lecture notes, exercises, and computer practicals – are accessed online and are complemented by a guided self-study programme. Weekly two hour face-to-face help session with a course instructor provide an opportunity for participants to raise questions and gain further advice on the material.

Participants can enrol for the whole course or for as many of the four parts as are relevant to them – allowing them to ensure the training best needs their needs as a researcher.
