TEL highlights – September 2022

Here’s a summary of the activity that took place in the Hive this September.

Pre-semester checklist

The TEL and IT Services Teams have provided a checklist to help staff get ready for teaching!

Effective Lecturing Workshop

An ‘Effective Lecturing Workshop’ took place on Wednesday 21st September. It provided an excellent introduction to lecturing and some key tips and techniques which can be used to lecture effectively. This was an in-person workshop and was not recorded.

‘Booking with me’ now available

‘Bookings with me’ in Outlook is a web-based personal scheduling page that integrates with the free/busy information from your Outlook calendar. This allows staff and students to schedule a meeting or appointment with you. You can request to have this service enabled by contacting the IT Service Desk.

Hot topic picks

September was a particularly busy month in the HIVE. These are some of the topics that were raised and discussed within the community.

  1. Groups in MMS that meet on multiple occasions in a week

The Hive discussed how to create online tutorial groups that take place multiple times within a week, using MMS.

Follow the discussion here.

  1. Groups in MMS and Moodle

Someone asked the Hive how to download groupings from MMS to then import into Moodle, so that different groups see different information on Moodle. To either create the groups and enrol the students, or populate existing groups that have been set up on Moodle, once the groups are populated within MMS, follow these steps:

  • Download the groups in spreadsheet (.xls) format from the Tutorial Groups tab for the module in MMS,
  • Open the spreadsheet, and delete columns B & C,
  • Save the spreadsheet as a .csv,
  • In Moodle, go to Users > Bulk Enrolments in the Administration block on the RH side,
  • Upload the .csv (leave the default settings in place) and click ‘Enrol them to my course’.
  1. Playing the game and transition to HE

A new survey from the University of Kent presents an evaluation of an online game-based student access, retention, progression and attainment. The aim was to help prepare and support students in their journey from pre-enrolment to graduation.

  1. Copying older Panopto videos to new Moodle folders

Someone asked the Hive if there’s an easy way to move older videos to new Moodle folders in order to re-use them, instead of simply copying them, which is very time consuming. Unfortunately there is not a way to automatically update embedded links on a Moodle page, but there are some things one can do to make this process easier.

  1. Moodle forum question

Someone asked the Hive, if there’s a way for only students and not staff to get alerts, every time there is a new post to a Moodle Discussion Forum.
